  • STRUKTON AND AMEPOWER TO DEVELOP US MARKET FOR POWER ELECTRONICS

UTRECHT, 4 October 2016 – Strukton Rolling Stock and AmePower have signed a cooperation agreement to develop the US market for power electronics. The companies trust that, by working together, they will be able to help public transport companies refurbish their fleet or build new rolling stock in the most sustainable, flexible and efficient way. They are both dedicated to deliver tailor-made products and services and go for optimal customer satisfaction.

The two companies have been working together for several years, bringing Strukton's experience in GTO to IGBT conversion to the US market. Among the highlighted projects are a high power electric locomotive upgrade and the refurbishment of the propulsion system of the A650 heavy rail trains of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA), which Talgo was recently awarded.

Strukton Rolling Stock specialises in power electronics for rolling stock and has projects world-wide. In the US market, Strukton successfully equipped the airport shuttles at O’Hare airport in Chicago with new propulsion systems in 2007 and prolonged the life of the vehicles with 20 years by doing so. Martien Janse, managing director at Strukton Rolling Stock: “The US has great public transport systems, both light rail and heavy rail. We can deliver experience built up during our long history of rolling stock refurbishment projects to guarantee a long life-span of the many fleets in operation in the US.”

AmePower specialises in supplying components like IGBTs and GTOs, building assemblies and repairing services for propulsion inverters. They are operating in different areas, including Transportation and Mining. AmePower’s managing director Luis Contreras is happy to join forces with Strukton: “We know the US market and have 20 years of experience in power electronics, but Strukton Rolling Stock brings additional experience in the specialised field of railways. And they are particularly good at bringing flexibility and sustainability through a cutting edge and modular technology and best of all, Buy America Act compliant.”

NEW YORK AREA TRANSIT TAKES INNOVATIVE STEPS INCREASING SAFETY & EFFICIENCY

Bethesda, 29 June 2017 - A New York area passenger transit has acquired Strukton Rail North America Inc.’s remotely controlled ZKL 3000 RC shunting devices. The transit will use the innovative rail tech to further improve the safety of its track workers, while reducing downtime of the network. Interruptions of train operations will be kept at a minimum thanks to this increased safety and efficiency.

The ZKL 3000 RC is a preinstalled shunting device from Strukton’s technology partner Dual Inventive. The innovation supports safe and efficient track access for railroad workers by allowing authorized workers to remotely activate and deactivate the shorting action. Once installed, the shunt removes the need to enter the track to place or remove shunting devices. An app on either a smartphone or tablet is used to operate the ZKL 3000 RC.

When switched, ZKL 3000 RC simulates a train in the section, causing the track circuit to show ‘OCCUPIED’, thus placing the protecting signals at danger. The section is immediately blocked, enabling rail workers to perform work on the track in a safe and efficient way.

    Electrical Topologies:

Two phase leg IGBT Building Blocks

Mainly used for High Power converters (>150kW) with a “two phase leg” modularity. A converter is made by connecting power modules together sharing the same DC-link.

    Three phase leg Building Blocks

For lower DC-link voltages (<900V) and powers (<150kW) a complete range of very compact and reliable inverters and battery chargers is available. They offer stand-alone functionality with self-protection and are easy to control by CAN or Ethernet bus.
