JUSTIFICATION TOOLKIT

You recognize the value of attending APTA EXPO, but how do you communicate that to management? Even though registration to expo is free, you still may need to justify the time off work, your travel expenses, and your reasons for wanting to attend.

EXPO is here to help!

On this page we have provided several helpful tips and documents for you to demonstrate why EXPO is an outstanding investment:

Write a letter to management.

Write a letter/email to your supervisor to validate your reasons for wanting to attend EXPO 2017.

Be money conscious.

In today’s challenging market, it’s important to save money where you can. Plus, the lower your expected expenses are, the higher the chance your trip to EXPO will be approved by management. Once you have registered for free for EXPO, make your travel plans early to save on costs.

  • Book in the block. Reserve your room at one of the many Atlanta hotels that are offering attendees specially-negotiated rates if you stay within the APTA room block.
  • Pack your bags. It’s also time to start arranging travel to/from Atlanta. APTA has worked with American Airlines, United, Delta and Amtrak to offer EXPO and Annual Meeting attendees special discounts.

Attend as many sessions as you can.

Power up your knowledge by attending free educational sessions taking place in the Learning Zones at EXPO 2017. Learn about the latest innovations that will help you and your organization operate more efficiently.

Interact with your public transportation industry peers.

With more than 15,000 professionals expected to attend EXPO, there are plenty of new business leads and contacts to be made! These contacts can be invaluable when you return to the office and can provide input far into the future on a variety of work-related topics. Collect business cards and follow up with them within a week of returning to the office. Don’t forget to include these contacts in your trip report (see below).

Create a trip report after EXPO.

Once your manager sees all the new business contacts you have made and how much you have learned how it can be applied in your system, they will be more likely to send you to an APTA conference again. They may even join you at the next EXPO!

Share your knowledge with your coworkers.

Bring back to the office your EXPO materials to share with your coworkers. For example, the EXPO Show Directory is extremely valuable as it includes information on the 800+ global exhibitors and even allows you to search by product category. Also, offer to do a brief presentation at a future staff meeting to let everyone know what you’ve learned.
