  • INDIANAPOLIS – September 22, 2017 – The elements can wreak havoc on exposed components, be it dust and debris, rain, saltwater or human-inflicted, hose-jet cleaning solutions. And special enclosures for external components can cost a bundle.

    Solutions are readily available, however, via REO-USA filter inductors, transformers, reactors, braking resistors and other components with ingress protection ratings up to IP67. Visitors to booth 6568 during the October 9-11 APTA EXPO at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta can see firsthand look at how these components pay their way.

    They can be mounted anywhere, underneath trains, on top of vehicles or other external locations. Even when exposed to the elements, the components themselves are fully protected. They simply shut out dust and shrug off moisture and other aggressive attackers, whether from Mother Nature or manmade.

    In addition to high IP ratings, components can also be designed with a pollution degree of PD4, the highest possible rating according to IEC 60664-1. The pollution degree is a classification of the amount of dry pollution and condensation in any given environment. This is an important factor to consider for any component mounted outside of the train.

    Ward notes that REO-USA’s latest liquid-cooled braking resistor rated to IP67 will be displayed at APTA. He and other specialists from the Indianapolis-based manufacturer can provide details on encapsulation technology surrounding the firm’s extensive array of components for railway applications.

    “Careful design considerations such as creepage/clearance distances and selection of encapsulation material all influence the design of components meant for exposure to the elements. Attention to these details ensures that pollutants are not introduced, maintaining efficient functionality and extending product lifetime,” states Ward.

  • INDIANAPOLIS – September 29, 2017 – Few if any other industries are subjected to the constant scrutiny and stringent standards faced by railway equipment and service providers.  It’s why APTA EXPO attendees need to visit the REO-USA booth (6568) October 9-11 2017, at the Georgia World Conference Center in Atlanta. 

    Along with reactors, resistors, transformers and other components designed for light rail and IC rail, as well as people movers, trolleys, hybrid and electric busses, REO-USA engineers and testing specialists can answer questions and provide full details on the company’s product performance and safety testing program.

    Every REO-USA railway component undergoes complete type testing in accordance with the EN 60310 standard, to fully verify and validate its design, reports Sr. Director of Engineering Rick Jones.  Domestic testing capabilities and the industry norms and standards used by the company include:

       •  Acoustics measurement  (EN 60076-10)

       •  Temperature testing  (EN 45545 and IEC 60085)

       •  Partial discharge measurement  (EN 50124)

       • High potential and high-current tests  (EN 61378 and 60076)

    “Components submitted by a customer – frequency converters, for example – can be integrated with our specially fitted testing stations with their modular units,” Jones said.

    “Our Indianapolis facility is ISO 9001 certified,” Jones points out, adding that REO-USA also carries IRIS certification via its Germany-based parent company.  In addition, many products have been certified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), and by European safety testing authority TUV in critical railway component areas such as;

       •  (UL) Insulating material systems in thermal classes F (155°C) and H ( 180°C)

       •  (UL and TUV)  EMC filters, inductors and braking resistors

    Numerous additional standards are also addressed by REO-USA’s testing program, including critical fire protection under standard EN 45545.  Virtually all tests are conducted at its Indianapolis headquarters.

    In the case of products from REO-USA, it starts long before type testing.  Rigorous testing of fully functioning prototype components utilizes advanced simulation techniques for key analyses, including:

       •  FEM thermal simulation – looking inside the actual product to detect potential “hot

          spots” that could impact product performance and longevity

  • The air choke is designed for use in vehicles in direct current (DC) voltage systems. This includes railed vehicles such as underground and commuter trains, but also trolley buses. The term “air choke” refers to the complete, ready-for operation unit comprising the inductor, cooled air flow, suspension and connections. It is an inductive component which stores magnetic energy.   • As a passive inductive component in power supplies and in power electronics, the buck-converter choke is used for attenuating undesirable frequencies or for saving and storing energy. The term buck-converter choke indicates the complete ready-for-use unit containing the choke, air cooling, mounting and connections.

    The choke is used in applications where DC voltages are converted into another (higher or lower) DC voltage in a vehicle power supply and is operated at a voltage of 500 V – 1100 V.

  • The transformer connects 3-phase alternating voltage networks of the same frequency but with differing voltages. The primary and secondary windings are magnetically coupled. The transformers are designed for use in vehicles in an AC or DC network (in inverter mode). This includes railed vehicles such as underground and commuter trains or passenger trains in AC network systems. The transformers are used for the galvanic isolation of the AC networks and for voltage adjustments of auxiliary plant inverter output voltage.
